Taxonomies varied from very general tags to more specific lists. The newsroom chose tag names and which category and level they belonged to. Categories and levels were chosen from the predefined list as described in Chapter 2. Below is a sampling of what taxonomies were developed. They range from generic to highly detailed.
This middle-of-the-road taxonomy classified the typical citation sources (e.g., pickup, editorial written) and wider measures of change (e.g., change in discourse, policy action) into separate groups.

The more detailed taxonomies were compiled by internal surveys and further refined through follow-up interviews with staff. Note that in this example the newsroom has set up tags for events that are particularly pertinent to its work.

Other newsrooms started with a simple, broad approach and reported that they will define more categories when they start seeing what kinds of events happen around their work. One organization that took this approach said it was primarily concerned with reporting its reach to funders, including important mentions by the community or influencers.
